Tuition can benefit all types of pupils. Here are two of Valerie Kemp's own recent personal experiences. Names have been changed to ensure the pupils' identities are kept anonymous.

Laura's Story

Laura had chosen to take Higher French as a subject in her 5th year of Secondary School. By November, it was clear that she was not getting on so well in class, and her teacher thought it would be better if she dropped the subject. Laura did not have much enthusiasm for learning vocabulary and therefore really struggled to improve. She also found it hard to get on with her teacher. However, she enjoyed French as a language and wanted to get her Higher as she thought that having a skill speaking languages was important for her future career. Therefore, with her parent's backing, it was decided that they would look for a tutor. I was employed by the family as Laura's French tutor in late November 2008. We worked very hard going over grammar, vocabulary, writing skills and techniques. Laura did a lot of homework and was very enthusiastic. She sat her Higher exam in May. She has recently found out that she got an A. Laura has decided to continue improving her French skills and wishes to work in France as an au pair during her gap year. This would have been unimaginable 12 months ago!

From Laura's mother - "Thank you so much for all that you did for Laura. I know that it wasn't always easy, but you succeeded in both inspiring her and helping her to get a good grade. She thoroughly enjoyed the tutoring and you gave her the confidence boost that she needed to carry on. It is without a doubt that all the extra tuition was what ensured that she got her Higher, but not only that , she started to believe in herself which is surely half the battle."

Jane's Story

Jane worked as an educational consultant from home but had a new job lined up in Monaco. She had French links but wanted to improve her language skills in time for commencing her new job as a teacher. Over three months of tuition, her grammar and vocabulary improved immensely and she has just started her new job with far more confidence about her ability to speak French. It was one less thing to worry about during a life-changing move from one job to another and one country to another!

From Jane - "Thanks for all your patience and support - you have been brilliant!"
