Home      Tutors      FAQ

Here are some of the questions that Tutors' Alliance commonly receives from tutors:

1. What legal regulation are tutors in the UK subject to?
In short, the answer is none - shocking, we know! Anyone can be a tutor and tutors do not need any specific qualifications or even CRB or Disclosure Scotland checks. At Tutors' Alliance, we believe that this is scandalous and for this reason we require all members of Tutors' Alliance to undergo CRB or Disclosure Scotland checks on an annual basis and to be suitably qualified to tutor the relevant subject.

2. How much does a tutor cost?
All Tutors' Alliance tutors are self-employed. Tutors pay an annual membership fee to Tutors' Alliance. Tutors set their own fees which vary according to qualifications, experience and geographic area. However, as a rough estimate, Tutors' Alliance members earn between £20 and £40 per hour.

3. How many hours do tutors work?
It is entirely up to the tutors themselves. Tutors can do as much or as little as you like and you can schedule it to fit around other commitments.

4. Do I have to pay tax?
You do have to fill out a Self-Assessment tax return on an annual basis and register as self-employed with HMRC. However, this is not as onerous as many tutors believe. All Tutors' Alliance members receive a Guide to Tutoring when they join which provides information about how to register as self-employed. Please see our Tax for Tutors page for further information.

5. How can I legally protect myself?
Tutors' Alliance advises all tutors to use our standard terms and conditions, which have been legally checked. These are available to Professional members. Tutors' Alliance also provides Public Liability Insurance to Basic members and Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance to Professional members. More information is given on our Insurance page for tutors.

6. Why should I become a Tutors' Alliance member?
Would parents leave their children with a babysitter they had never met and who they did not know the first thing about? No - then why would they do the same with a tutor? Having Tutors' Alliance membership and being able to provide a Tutor Check shows pupil that your qualifications, experience and references have been verified by a third party professional organisation and that you are serious about tutoring. If you need to be convinced further, please read our Why Tutors' Alliance? page and our Testimonials.
